Buckeye, AZ is a town of about 50,000 people 30 miles west of downtown Phoenix. It straddles the I-10 interstate highway that runs cross country from Jacksonville, FL to Los Angeles. Settled in 1877 by a small group from Creston, IA looking for a better climate for health reasons, it soon became a transportation hub in the west valley. Six miles of irrigation canal was first built in 1888. The railroad came along in 1910, a steam rail line to Phoenix in 1912 and a state highway in 1915.

These days Buckeye is a vibrant town with many opportunities for recreation. There are several community festivals and events including the Buckeye Air Fair which offers such things as a flight simulator, vintage aircraft, and opportunities to ride in helicopters, hot-air balloons, and biplanes. Another town favorite for over 40 years is Pioneer Days, featuring an original melodrama complete with boos and hisses from the audience.

Volunteer opportunities are available at many community venues including the history museum, the old train depot and the library. The Town of Buckeye Community Services Department also looks for special interest Class Instructors who would like to share their knowledge with others in Buckeye.

Venturing a little further, Maricopa County has several regional parks within a short distance. The closest, Buckeye Hills Regional Park, is mostly undeveloped, but allows primitive hiking and offers scenic views of the Gila River. Estrella Mountain Regional Park is about 15 miles east of Buckeye. It boasts the areas only grass picnic area, as well as hiking, petroglyphs, and pristine desert scenery overlooking the confluence of the Gila and Agua Fria rivers. White Tank Mountain Regional Park, about 25 miles northeast of Buckeye, is one of the largest regional parks with a long list of events and activities throughout the season. There are also 2 paved and barrier-free trails which allows everyone the opportunity to experience the splendor of the desert southwest.
